Prison currencies: money, tokens, gems and beacons
Prison servers almost never run on one currency. Three or four is normal, each buying a different category, and working out which one gates your progress is the fastest way to stop wasting time on the wrong grind.
The usual set
- Money. From selling blocks. Buys rankups, plot expansions and shop items. The one with the biggest faucet and usually the least interesting.
- Tokens. From mining blocks directly, not from selling them. Buys pickaxe enchant levels. On most servers this is the real bottleneck, because enchants are what raise every other rate.
- Gems, credits or shards. A premium-ish currency from crates, votes, events or the store. Buys cosmetics, boosters and sometimes enchant unlocks.
- Beacons, essence or prestige points. Awarded at prestige or rebirth. Buys permanent upgrades that survive resets.
Working out the bottleneck
Ask which currency your next meaningful upgrade costs. If it is tokens, then anything that raises tokens per block beats anything that raises money per block, and a token-gain enchant is worth more than a sell multiplier even though the sell multiplier looks bigger on paper. If it is money, the reverse. Servers frequently advertise the money number because it is larger, while the token number is the one doing the work.
Why token gain compounds and money does not
Money buys rankups, which are a one-time step. Tokens buy enchant levels, which raise your rate permanently and therefore raise future token income too. That makes tokens the compounding currency on almost every prison server, and it is why experienced players push token gain hard and early even when it feels slower.
Conversions and traps
Some servers let you convert money to tokens at a shop. Check the rate against what you earn per hour of each: a bad conversion rate is a common way to lose several hours of progress in one click. And check whether tokens survive a prestige or rebirth. If they do not, spending them before you reset is not optional.

Miner enchant raises that rate directly, which puts it squarely in the compounding category described above.
