Prison PvP: warps, drop rules and combat versions

Prison PvP is opt-in and location-based. The mines are safe, the plot world is safe, and combat happens at named warps you choose to walk into. What varies between servers is the drop rule and the combat mechanics.

Drop rules

  • Full drop. Die and lose your inventory, pickaxe included. The highest-stakes version, and rare on servers where the pickaxe represents weeks of investment.
  • Keep pickaxe. You drop consumables and gear but keep the pickaxe. The common compromise.
  • Keep inventory. PvP is purely for fun, rankings or a kill counter. Common on OP prison, where gear gaps make fair fights impossible anyway.

Check this before you walk in, usually with /warp pvp having a sign or a title telling you.

Combat versions, and why prison servers stay on 1.8

Minecraft 1.9 changed combat: attacks gained a cooldown, shields replaced blocking with a sword, and the rhythm shifted from click speed to timing. A large part of the PvP-focused Minecraft population never accepted that change, which is why prison servers keep 1.8 protocol support alive through a proxy far longer than other gamemodes do.

In practice most prison servers accept clients from 1.8 up to current and run 1.8-style combat mechanics server-side. If you care about combat feel, it is worth asking which mechanics the server uses rather than which versions it accepts, because those are different questions.

What to bring

On a keep-pickaxe or keep-inventory server, nothing you would miss. On a full-drop server, a dedicated PvP loadout and none of your mining kit. Prison PvP kits tend to be simpler than on a dedicated PvP server because enchanting is aimed at pickaxes, so a plain diamond or netherite set with a well-chosen potion is often the whole meta.

Ranked and tracked PvP

Better servers keep leaderboards, kill streaks and sometimes seasonal PvP resets, which gives combat a reason to exist beyond the fight itself. Ask which of those a server tracks before you invest in a PvP loadout, because a server with no record of your fights is offering you a sandbox rather than a competition.
